Auction Funds Recovered
On 04/22/08 officers informed detectives that they had initiated a grand theft investigation involving the loss of approximately $32,000 from East Side Boys and Girls Club. Officers were told that the Boys and Girls Club had a fund raiser auction on Friday April 18th, 2008 and the donations were placed in a locked metal file cabinet on Monday April 21, 2008 for safekeeping prior to being deposited in the bank. Between Monday and Tuesday, someone had taken the money bag which contained the $32,000 in donations. It was suspected that an employee was possibly responsible for the theft. After several hours of police interviews, detectives identified employee Mychelle Garcia, 39 years of age, as a possible suspect. Garcia was arrested 04/23/08 and a search of her residence led to the recovery of a large amount of money suspected of being part of the donations from the Boys and Girls Club. As the investigation continued, detectives were led to an additional home where they recovered checks and credit card receipts that were from donations given to the Boys and Girls Club. Garcia was charged with Grand Theft.
DUI Checkpoint
The Santa Barbara Police Department conducted two DUI/Driver License checkpoints on Saturday night 04/26/08 from approximately 9:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. The first checkpoint was at 700 E. Canon Perdido Street and resulted in a Felony arrest for possession of a controlled substance, false information to a peace officer, and suspended license. In addition four citations for unlicensed driver were given. The second checkpoint was at 1100 San Andres Street and resulted in two DUI arrests and two citations for unlicensed driver. A total of eight vehicles were towed from both checkpoints.
Woman Sexually Assaulted on Busy State Street
On 04/26/08, at approximately 12:45 a.m., a 24 year old female was walking down the sidewalk on the 500 block of State Street when a 51 year old Hispanic man, later identified as Frank Sanchez, came up behind her, placed his hand underneath her dress, and sexually battered her. The incident was witnessed by several people who flagged down passing police officers. Officers detained Sanchez and spoke with the 24 year old female. She confirmed the lewd act. Other witnesses came forward to report that Sanchez had been engaging in similar activity with other woman in the preceding ? hour. Sanchez was taken into custody for the sexual battery and subsequent investigation reveled that he had also been involved in Indecent Exposure. Sanchez was booked in Santa Barbara County Jail for felony Sexual Battery and Indecent Exposure.
