SANTA BARBARA, CA - On 04/13/08 at approximately 11:35 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of Garden St. regarding a robbery that had just occurred with a knife. Officers contacted the victim who stated he was Eastbound on Yanonali Street on his bicycle in the area of the Labor Line (400 block of East Yanonali Street) when he noticed three Hispanic male adults. As he passed them, one of them grabbed his backpack and yanked him off his bicycle. At that point, he heard the blade of a knife being opened and one of the suspects yelled to him in Spanish to give him the bike or he would cut him. The victim was able to grab a baseball bat from his backpack and threaten the suspects with it. The suspects fled with the victim’s backpack and bicycle.
While officers were talking to the victim, Officers drove toward the Labor Line in order to locate a crime scene. The officers were flagged down by a second victim near the Garden St. undercrossing. This victim had been beaten about the face and told Officers he had his backpack and bicycle stolen by three to four Hispanic male adults near the area of the Labor Line. The victim was transported to the hospital and was eventually admitted.
As the second case was being investigated, dispatch advised that a third robbery victim was calling from the Amtrak station and stating that he was the victim of a robbery and that he was now accompanied by an individual who was claiming that his arm was broken. The third victim told dispatch that the suspects were last scene walking Westbound on Montecito Street. Officers contacted the subject with the hurt arm who provided a very general statement as to what happened to his arm. The investigation at the Amtrak station revealed that the subject with the hurt arm was actually a suspect in the previous robberies.
While all this is going on, officers decided to do a premise check on the railroad tracks near Rancheria Street and contacted two individuals who matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects given by victims and witnesses. One of the subjects threw a box cutter which was recovered. Officers took the available victims to the area where both subjects were detained. The subjects were positively identified as the ones that had committed the robberies. The subjects were also in possession of one of the stolen bicycles.
Arrested for robbery, attempted robbery and battery were: Julio Hernandez, 35 years of age, Pedro Razo, 41 years of age, and Rogelio Manzanarez, 23 years of age.
