SANTA BARBARA, CA – Wednesday 8/22/07: Today at 9:40 a.m., police responded to a call of an assault that just occurred near the Labor Line at Garden and Yanonali Street. Police found the victim, Crispulo Sanchez age 55 with a severe jagged edged stab wound to his forearm. Sanchez told police he has known the suspect for several years and his name is “Santana.” The suspect was last seen headed toward nearby Laguna Creek. Officer Martin Menez was checking the area and stopped a suspicious man lurking in the reedy creek bed near 400 E. Yanonali Street. The suspect provided a false name but was detained because he matched the suspect’s description. Sanchez identified the suspect as his assailant. The suspect has been identified as Santana Delgado Hernandez, age 34. Officer Menez found several fresh blood drops on Hernandez’s clothing. The clothing was seized as evidence.
The reported circumstance of the assault is that Hernandez accused Sanchez of stealing his bicycle. Sanchez denied committing the theft. Hernandez provoked a fight by smashing the end off a 40 oz beer bottle and thrusting at Sanchez with the impromptu weapon. A jagged shard of glass sliced deep in Sanchez’s forearm, prompting a hasty retreat and brief foot chase. Sanchez reached the sanctuary of a neighboring business district and Police Dispatch was notified.
Sanchez was treated at Cottage Hospital. He received an undisclosed number of sutures and staples to close the wound. Hernandez was booked for assault with a deadly weapon. Both men are homeless and claim occasional residency at the Cacique Street Shelter.
