SANTA BARBARA, CA – 9/24/2007. On 9/21/07 at 9:20 p.m. a 43-year-old woman living in the 200 block of Santa Barbara Street was watching T.V in a back bedroom. She suddenly noticed a man in her backyard looking in through her bedroom window. She shouted at him to leave while calling 9-11. While on the phone with police dispatch, she looked out her front window and provided the suspect’s direction of travel. Officers Feller and Stagis arrived and started checking the neighborhood. They spotted a man matching the suspect’s description. The officers ordered him to stop but he took off running. As the officers gave chase, camera accessories were literally falling out of the suspect’s pockets. The officers caught the suspect, John Jeffery Wright, age 46 after a two block foot chase. The victim of the prowling identified Wright as the suspect seen in her backyard. Wright either possessed or dropped: a professional grade Canon 5D camera, flash, accessories, plus a cosmetics bag full of cosmetics. A crack pipe was found in his pocket. The investigation determined the camera equipment had just been stolen from a nearby residence also located in the 200 block of Santa Barbara Street. Wright was booked for residential burglary, prowling, resisting arrest, and possession of a crack pipe. His bail is $50,000. Wright stated he is homeless.
On 9/22/07 at 2:30 a.m. a 44-year-old woman returning home by taxi was dropped off at the corner of San Andres and Micheltorena Street. As she was walking the 150 feet to her residence, a man on a bicycle dismounted and confronted her. He grabbed her arm and pushed a sharp object against her ribs. He vulgarly demanded sex. The woman feared for her life and agreed to take him to her residence. They walked together; him holding her arm and pushing the sharp weapon against her side. When they reached her driveway, the woman broke the suspect’s grip and ran. The suspect grabbed her purse, but she escaped. The suspect fled with the purse. The purse contained: identification, cash, and her cell phone. The woman ran home and called 9-11. After obtaining a statement, the officers called the cell phone and the suspect answered. An officer pretended to be a friend of the victim and offered a cash reward for the return of the purse. A meeting was arranged a few blocks away. A team of officers staked out the area. A man matching the suspect’s description soon rode up on a bicycle. He was found to have the victim’s purse, cash, and cell phone in his possession. He also had a sharp pair of scissors, which is believed to be the weapon. Police arrested the suspect, Jesus Sambrano Santiago, age 33, who states he is homeless. He was booked for robbery, kidnapping, and attempted rape, bail: one million dollars.
On 9/22/07 at 9:30 p.m. officer Shawn Hill was working in an undercover police car. He noticed a man loitering at the dead-end of 100 Kimberly Avenue. The suspect was intently inspecting a parked motor scooter. The suspect grabbed the scooter and jiggled it back and forth. The officer maintained surveillance as the suspect walked away, returned, looked all around, and then knelt down next to the scooter. Officer Hill drove up and shined his light on the suspect, interrupting him in the process of cutting the lock with a hacksaw. The suspect, John Bergstrum, age 42 was arrested for attempted vehicle theft and parole violation. He is being held without bail. Bergstrum provided an address in the 1000 block of Del Sol.

SANTA BARBARA, CA – 9/13/2007. Yesterday (Wed) at 3:00 p.m. a 26-year-old Oxnard man was driving a company work truck to his employment on Milpas Street. He was traveling about 65 mph in the fast lane when a 2007 Tacoma pickup truck closed from behind at a high rate of speed. The Tacoma tailgated to within a few feet. The victim moved over into the slow lane to allow the Tacoma to pass. The driver of the Tacoma did pass, but then pulled directly in front of the victim and applied the brakes. It appeared to the victim that the suspect was deliberately antagonizing him. The suspect driver repeated a pattern of accelerating to 65 mph, and then rapidly braking while directly in front of the victim’s truck. The victim exited the freeway at Milpas Street. The suspect quickly exited too, just ahead of the victim vehicle. The victim slowly drove down the off-ramp and north on Milpas Street, hoping the suspect would leave him alone. He lost sight of the suspect for several blocks. Suddenly, the suspect vehicle appeared right behind him. The victim used his cell phone to call police to report being followed by an aggressive driver. The victim parked at his workplace in the 600 block of N. Milpas Street. The suspect parked on a side street and confronted the victim on-foot. The suspect, Idelberto Cruz Martinez, age 23, of Ventura, challenged the victim to fight. Two of the victim’s co-workers approached, and they were challenged to fight as well. Just then, SBPD Sergeant Stoney arrived to handle the disturbance. He tried to separate the parties and ordered Martinez to step back. Martinez exclaimed that the police “can’t tell me what to do,” and assumed an aggressive stance toward the police officer. A second officer arrived and Martinez was arrested and handcuffed. Martinez smelled of alcohol and failed a sobriety test. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI, being an unlicensed driver, disturbing the peace by means of challenging to fight, and resisting arrest. It turned out that Martinez was not the vehicle owner. Prior to being booked at jail, Martinez phoned the owner to say where the Tacoma was parked. The owner, a 49-year-old Ventura woman arrived to the disturbance scene just in time to see her Tacoma being towed as an impounded vehicle. The woman told police that she has known Martinez for years. She allowed Martinez to move in with her after he was “kicked out” of his residence. She knew Martinez was unlicensed, but she loaned him her truck anyway so he could get to work. The District Attorney will be asked to file a charge against the woman for knowingly providing a vehicle to an unlicensed driver.

Identical Twins, Multiple Thefts–Victim Targeted Four Times
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
SANTA BARBARA, CA – 9/10/07. In separate encounters, police arrested identical twin women this weekend in connection with multiple thefts at the same residence. This unlikely scenario began September 1st, when a 26-year-old woman reported that an unknown suspect had broken into her residence located in the 2000 block of State Street. The suspect took clothing and jewelry. Police recovered the suspect’s fingerprints inside the residence. They were matched to: Alyssa Chang Nowak, age 24. Meanwhile, two days later on September 3rd, the victim’s residence was broken into twice more. Additional clothing and more jewelry was stolen. Detectives set up a silent alarm in case the suspect returned. Based on the fingerprint match, a BOL (Be on the Lookout) was issued for Alyssa Nowak’s arrest for residential burglary. On September 8th, police responded to a disturbance call at De La Guerra and Castillo Streets. Police contacted Andrea Chang Nowak, age 24, who happens to be Alyssa’s identical twin sister. The resemblance was so striking that she was brought to SBPD so that a fingerprint comparison could settle the issue. Detectives determined that she was Andrea (not Alyssa.) However, a detective also noticed she was wearing jewelry matching property stolen in one of the State Street burglaries. The victim was contacted and, sure enough, several items were identified as stolen including a pearl necklace with a distinctive clasp and a Chanel sunglasses case. Andrea Nowak was arrested for possession of stolen property, bail $20,000. Just a few hours later, the silent alarm placed in the State Street residence was activated. Responding police found evidence of a break-in. A detective saw Alyssa inside the residence, and ordered her to surrender herself. Alyssa came outside and was arrested without incident. She was wearing stolen jewelry including a diamond ring and a pearl necklace with distinctive clasp. Alyssa was booked for four counts of residential burglary. Her bail is $250,000. Both women list themselves as homeless.
