What do you do when a friend faces the ultimate hardship? Nine years ago the Friendship Paddle
was formed as a way to help a friend, Doug McFadden, battle an inoperable brain tumor. In doing
so,the group of friends raised funds and spirits via a relay paddle across the Santa Barbara Channel.

This year we paddle for Mike Moses. Mike’s work has always been in helping others, especially in
times of urgency. He is a 26-year veteran and Captain with the City of Santa Barbara Fire Department
as well as a 34-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Lifeguards. He has spent most of his life
learning, conditioning, and teaching those around him to be able and ready to save lives in a split-
second situation. .

Mike was hired by the Santa Barbara City Fire Department when he was 27 years old. He and his wife,
Pat, have been married for 23 years and have raised two daughters and have two granddaughters. Now, at the age of 53, Mike has developed a rare form of cancer, multiple myeloma. His first symptoms were felt while in the water at one of his favorite surf spots, Rincon. This is the first summer in 34 years that Mike has not guarded the beaches surrounding Malibu. Instead, he is facing bone marrow transplants and chemotherapy. .

The Friendship Paddle was created around the love of the ocean. Mike can be considered a true waterman. Lifeguarding, paddle boarding, surfing, free diving, and fishing are not just things he does, they are things that define who he is. His passion for the water and commitment to his community is a natural fit for The Friendship Paddle and with their support, Mike and his family will not be fighting alone.

For nine years The Friendship Paddle has made long journeys for community members facing
the battle of their lives. On September 24th they will paddle across the Santa Barbara Channel for Mike and his family. Each of our boat captains, paddlers, and Mike’s beneficiary team will be showing their love and support by raising money to help Mike and his family during this difficult and stressful time.

Will you make a gift to help us achieve our goal? Please support my paddle for Mike by contributing to The Friendship Paddle.
